Notes:

The last show/stop of the band's 1970 North American tour, the group played 2 shows on this date (an afternoon, and an evening performance) because of overwhelming demand for tickets.

The afternoon show took place at 2 p.m, and the evening performance took place at 8 p.m, this project is a remaster of the evening show.

Both shows are excellent, and were luckily recorded in good quality by people who were close to the stage and who used good equipment, but some collectors do have their preferences on which performance they prefer (I'm partial to the afternoon show myself).

These shows are special for various reasons, some I've already discussed (i.e: the band played 2 performances on the same date, it's the last stop of the North American 1970 tour) but there are other factors that make these performances special like the group doing a lot of experimentation and rare numbers during both shows, and the fact that this is the band's first time playing Madison Square Garden.

But the thing that makes this show special is that this concert was played the day after Jimi Hendrix died, something that definitely shocked the music world.

During both performances, Robert called attention to this to the audience, and did a sort of brief tribute to Jimi during both performances, which I personally found to be quite a decent thing for him to do because although they (the band) were probably not as close to him as other musicians and bands were, his death was indeed a terrible loss to the music industry.

Jimi's style and performances changed the way artists could play rock and roll, and alot is owed to him.

Zeppelin being one of the biggest and hottest bands at the time could've just not said anything on his passing, they could've thought what many artists think from time to time when a band becomes hot that they're "the future", and that people like Hendrix were "the past", and therefore obsolete, but calling attention to his passing and saying that his death was a great loss I think was very big of them to do.

For those that may not know, there are 3 audience recordings for the afternoon performance, and only one recording for the evening show.

There's quite an interesting story/history behind the evening performance recording, I've personally put together the history/back story of the tape using various sources online, (my thanks go out to Darth9Neo,Badloser,DADGAD, and everyone else who documented the history of the tape for the community):

Back in January 2004, the taper of this show (Darth9Neo) joined a peer to peer file sharing server that had about 30 Zeppelin shows posted on it's server, one of the shows that was posted on the hub was "American Woman", what we know to be the NYC 70 afternoon show.

The taper sent a message to the uploader of the show (Badloser) to thank him for posting the show on the hub, Badloser wrote back saying that it was no problem, and that he'll seed as long as it takes so that Darth9Neo can finish the download.

The 2 members got to talking with each other, and Darth9Neo mentions in conversation that he wants to complete the download of "American Woman" so he can compare it to his own recording he made of the show on the 19th.

Darth9Neo was going to try and make a 'matrix' out of both recordings. Darth asked Badloser if he was interested in downloading his own recording, he said yes, and a few minuted later, it was available to him to download song by song.

After both had completed their downloads, Badloser sat down to have a listen to Darth9Neo's version, and was quite surprised at what he discovered on Darth's recording.

For starters, the songs on Darth's recording not only sounded different from the "American Woman" release, but it also had extra songs on it that were not found on "American Woman", also, Robert's mentioning to the crowd about Hendrix's death was worded differently then it was on "American Woman", but he still referred to it as yesterday.

Badloser realized that what he was listening to was a completely different recording from the "American Woman" performance, and that the band had played 2 different shows, both recorded on the same date.

Badloser checked the tour itinerary for 1970, and couldonly find mention of the band doing one show on the 19th, which kind of added to the confusion and excitement about this new recording.

Badloser communicated with a few colleages in the Zeppelin community about this new recording, and was still not given a concrete answer, so he decided that the best way to find out what this recording is was to post it online on 'sharingthegroove' ( now know as 'dimeadozen' ).

He explained that this was a recording made on the 19th, but was not the show that has been available for years, this was a brand new show, and the performance was something special.

The tape created a lot of interest from the community in the first few hours, some were convinced that it was a fake right off the bat without even hearing it.

Finally, a friend of Badloser's sent a PM to him about the recording and stated that the band had indeed played 2 shows at Madison Square Garden on the 19th, an Afternoon performance, and an evening performance.

After that, it was clear what Badloser had in his possession, that the new recording was of the evening show of that date.

Badloser contacted Darth9Neo about what he had discovered, and Darth said that he assumed his recording was of the same show as the AW recording, he wasn't aware there had been a show in the afternoon.

He wasn't hoarding the show, he had passed out copies to his friends over the years without realising it was the only recording of one of Zeppelin's greatest ever shows.

Darth was more than happy to release his show for free to the community, and Badloser was happy to share the recording with the community as well.

The taper (Darth9Neo) back story:

I taped this show on a borrowed Bell and Howll Cassette recorder, and transferred the recording the next day to open reel tape.

For it's time, and the technology used, I thought it was a very good sounding tape.

I was seated in the first 10 rows- that is, from about the middle of "Immigrant Song". When the song started, I was in the 83rd row.

What we've done to make this remaster/project:

- We've brought the volume down slightly, the raw recording was running a little too hot, creating some slight distortion/peaking, so we've tried to reduce that in the remaster.

- We've tried to balance the instruments as best we could. Originally, the vocals and bass were coming in stronger than the other instruments, we've tried to create more of a balanced sound to the recording.

- We've tried to bring out things that were buried in the raw recording, (comments, clapping, cheering, etc). After we cleaned up the recording, we discovered a very funny conversation that happens during "Bring It On Home" where either the taper (or someone near the taper) asks a woman in the audience "would you mind if you could sit down", and she replies "yes I would mind", and there's a moment of heated discussion.

- We've tried to bring out more of the ambiance of the recording, to try and give listeners a sense of the venue, and what the taper experienced.

- We've tried to reduce as much tape hiss as possible.

In regards to the title:

We were mulling over title ideas for quite a while for this project, the Hendrix references had already been exhausted, we couldn't think of a New York reference that really fit to the show, so we eventually started brainstorming about trying to come up with an idea that revolves around the sort of sombre tone that the show has (since it revolves around Jimi's death, and is dedicated to Jimi Hendrix's memory).

Eventually, someone came up with the idea of using the Elton John song title "Funeral For A Friend" from the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album.

We thought it sounded suiting and clever.

We hope that everyone here will enjoy this.

Cheers!

My Personal Notes:

Notes about the concert, and performance:

This is one of my all time favourite Zeppelin shows, and it's my absolute favourite show of the entire 1970 tour.

An excellent performance from the group, this show is equal to their infamous "Blueberry Hill" performance in terms of both performance and sound quality, it's a shame that the recording is incomplete.

The band played 2 shows in Hawaii that night, (the first was held at 7 P.M, and the second was held at 10:30 P.M).

This is taken from a review posted on Boot-Review.com about EVSD's release of this show "September VI":

Led Zeppelin played two shows on September 6th in Honolulu. The early show, and the source of this new release on Empress Valley, was at 7 pm and was followed by a second show at 10:30pm. The early show was shortened to accommodate the schedule and the band play what they must considered to be essential to their show. "Bring It On Home",

"That's The Way", "Bron-Y-Aur", the organ solo and "Thank You" are all omitted and only one encore, "Communication Breakdown", is played. This tape surfaced in the early days of the protection gap cd with Holiday In Waikiki on Gold Standard. The famous Box Of Tricks (Red Hot RH-023) followed several years later. Almost Son Of Blueberry Hill (Shout To The Top STTP 123) was a good, inexpensive way to obtain this show and is one of the better titles produced by that chequered label. Finally Akashic gave it the expensive, limited edition deluxe treatment on In Exotic "Honolulu" (Akashic AKA-24) which they released at the same time as The Rolling Stones In Exotic Honolulu (Akashic AKA-23), a tape of the early show in the same venue on January 1st, 1973. The tape captures the entire show and is very clear. September VI sounds significantly more thick, dynamic, heavy and powerful and makes the others sound very thin and tinny. There is a cut in the tape after "Heartbreaker" and at 4:52 in "Whole Lotta Love". "Moby Dick",
which is cut on the Gold Standard and STTP releases, is complete on Empress Valley.

All of the members of the band are in fine form, but Robert is the real star of the show, his voice is just incredible, with excellent range and power.

Some collectors would even argue that this performance is better then "Blueberry Hill", (myself being one of them, but please keep in mind that is just my opinion on the issue).

There are even 2 bootlegs of this show that have compared this show to "Blueberry Hill", ("Almost Son Of Blueberry Hill from the Shout To The Top Label, and "Bastard Son Of Blueberry Hill", which is a fan made remaster.edited version of the STTT bootleg release)

I don't know if people would feel the way they do about this show if a complete recording existed, if a complete tape existed, and we heard the rest of what the band performed that night, we might have a completely different opinion about it, (i.e: their acoustic set might have paled in comparsion to "Blueberry Hill" , there were a lot of technical problems throughout the show, someone had a seizure during the bands acoustic set, and a fight broke out in the audience, which probably extended the delays of the concert).

So having only a fragment of this concert is indeed a sad thing, but it could also be a blessing in disguise.

An interesting moment happens during the performance, someone from the audience yells out a request for "Whole Lotta Love", and Robert assures him that it will be played later, so he then yells out for "White Summer", that person in the audience must've seen the band perform once before in either 69 or early 1970, because how else would he have known that the band played that song?

It's known that the Yardbirds played that song, but how would he know that Zeppelin played that song unless he saw them in concert previously?

Legend has it that the taper of this show gave Robert Plant his master(s) when the band returned to Hawaii in 71.

If the rumour is true, it's unclear how they met Plant, and on what day he gave them away since the band played 2 shows in Hawaii, the final stops of their U.S 71 tour, and the last time the band would ever play there.

One of my very dear, and close friends attended one of those concerts in 71.

Besides the audience recording, the only other document of this concert is a brief fragment of silent, colour film 8mm footage of their performance which captures the band playing "Immigrant Song", and "Communication Breakdown".

The film has been used in several Zeppelin bootleg DVD's such as "Early Visions", and "Assemblage", the footage is actually quite clear, and striking for it's age.

In the film you can see a Hawaiian "Lei" placed around the neck of John Paul Jones' bass, and Robert carries it off stage with him.

Notes about the sound quality, and why we wanted to work on this recording:

This show is one of the rare Zeppelin recordings that actually benefits from having some distortion in the channels.

Usually distortion of any kind will usually bring the quality of the recording down significantly, but it actually sort of enhances the power of the recording and performance, it gives it a little more "omph", but it is still an issue with the tape, and we wanted to try and bring it down a little, yet try not to eliminate that punch it brings to the recording.

The recording is very heavy on treble, Jimmy, and Robert are the most dominant in the mix, while Jones and Bonham are very low in the mix, so we wanted to try and balance the instruments.

The volume of the recording was another issue that needed to be resolved, it was unnescessarily amplified way too much, causing a lot of clipping.

Listening to the raw recording on headphones is extremely grating on the ears, almost impossible to do.

The recording also lacks some of the presence of the venue.

So the goal of the project was to make a balanced, yet still punchy recording, that didn't have over amplified volume, and gave the listener a sense of acoustics/the venue.

We decided to add on the concert footage to the project because we wanted to give collectors a little something extra, (give collectors not only an audio document of their performance, but a visual one as well).

This show has been released several times throughout the years, (the latest version being EVSD'S "September VI"), and none of the labels have released the audio and the video together in the same package, which I think would be a nice thing to do for collectors, (having both sources together in one package instead of having to track them both down).

We have left the concert footage untouched, the way it's in the torrent is the way we've received it.

We would've liked to synch our project audio over the footage, and would like to try and see if it's possible to clean up the footage, but we unfortunately don't have any video editing software....yet!

The title comes from a line from the television series "Hawaii-Five O", we thought it would be a clever name for a title, that makes a reference to the part of the world where the concert took place.

We hope you all enjoy the work we've done.

Cheers.

Notes:

This project is a combination of both raw and remastered versions of 2 of our favourite, and what we personally think are the best sounding versions of the 1st (TMOQ) and 2nd (Rubber Dubber) tape sources of the infamous "Blueberry Hill" Show.

The recordings have just been remastered, they have not been merged together with other tape sources to make a complete show.

We chose to do just straight remasters of these tape sources for this reason:

There are 6 tape sources of this show in circulation, each source is very good, and brings something to the table, (i.e: some have more tape in between songs, some are more complete than others, some sound better than others, etc).
Zeppelin collectors have very strong feelings about this show, and what they feel is the best tape source of the 6 in circulation, and what sources would make for a "perfect mix".

They also have very strong opinions about which version of the tape is the best, so trying to put together a merge of this show that will please collectors is a very tricky thing to do.

We decided to spare ourselves that headache and just focus on improving the sound quality of these tape sources.

This project was just done in fun, we had no intentions of releasing a definitive version of this show.

The 1st tape source came to me in a trade I made with a very close friend of mine many years ago.

I've only traded it out to other people a handfull of times, I really didn't think it was anymore special then the other versions of the 1st tape source until I started hearing other versions/releases of the 1st tape source.

This version I'm sharing with everyone has a much fuller, and brighter sound to it then previous releases.

The biggest advantage this version has over the others though is that it's running at the correct tape speed, older versions ( like GM's "Blueberry Hill") run too slow.

The 2nd tape source (known as the "Rubber Dubber" source) comes straight from an original Rubber Dubber LP.

Porgie's transfer sounds much better than the boot releases I've heard.

Whether the change in sound quality is due to the transfer, or if they transferred it from something like a cassette copy of the LP (like some of the "PB" releases) I don't know, but I personally find the silver releases to be a little duller than Porgie's transfer (nothing beats the sound of vinyl).

As for the remasters, this is what we've done:

- We've tried to balance the instruments and the acoustics as much as possible.
- We've reduced as much tape hiss as possible.
- We've tried to bring out things that were buried in the recording (crowd cheers, clapping, commentary).

The title comes from a Plantation Robert makes before the band play "Since I've Been Loving You".

We wanted to come up with a different title idea for this project instead of just recycling the "Blueberry Hill" title because we felt it's been done to death.

We had come up with several different title ideas, we had thought about calling the project "Up To No Good In Inglewood", "Floor 'Em At The Forum", and "Manifest Destiny".

They sounded good, but really didn't stick, and pack the kind of punch we wanted.

One day, while listening to the work we'd done on the recording..it hits us.

We came to the part where the band is about to play "Since I've Been Loving You", and he says to the crowd "Heavy Vibraphones!", and we thought that sounded pretty cool, and decided to use it.

We hope everyone here will enjoy this.

Cheers!

"A really great show right after the Bath blowout. This show is like a sister to the Bath show but the atmosphere is very different. It is very intense and almost mysterious, and the band is on. Dazed And Confused is a great version and Robert's vocals are simply perfect. He even achieves the album cut's high and wailing vocals in Since I've Been Loving You with extreme ease in this great version. Moby Dick is an awesome display and the medley is great."

Quoted From the book "The Man Who Led Zeppelin" by C.Welch:

"Peter Grant wandered out into the crowds milling around the stage, working his way around the permimeter on the lookout for pirate recording activity. Not surprisingly, there were blatant attempts to record the concert being made by organised professionals armed with stereo tape recorders and microphones on boom stands. Several digruntled 'engineers' set up in front of the stage soon found their tapes being unceremoniously confiscated. Peter ripped one tape spool from a machine and began tearing it up."

Press Review:

"Another German record-breaker , with the six thousand crowd being bigger than the previous three rock shows at the Deutscheiandhalle. There were hoards of police with water-cannons ready to quell the anticipated riots, but Zeppelin left the audience too limp from the sheer excitement of the two-and-a-half hour show. Even the police were toe-tapping and hand-clapping when Robert requested it!Led Zeppelin are really something else – they even made the tough Berlin police bop on the aisles!" (Press July 1970)

Besides this audience recording, there is also concert video footage of the bands performance in circulation.

It's been used in a few Zeppelin compilation DVD's like "Film Noir".

We wanted to include the footage with the concert as "bonus material", but unfortunately, that didn't pan out, so this is just a sort of "bare bones" release.

There's also some great colour video footage of the band touring/sightseeing around Germany around the time of the performance that we also wanted to include in the project, but like I stated, that didn't pan out, so we just hope that everyone will just enjoy the work that we've done to the recording.

Notes about what we've done to make this recording:

- We've tried to correct the tape speed issues that plague the recording as best as we can, (it was originally running 4% slow).

- We've tried to balance the instruments as best we could.

- We've tried to bring out things that were buried in the recording (cheers, crowd banter, clapping)

- We've tried to reduce as much tape hiss as possible.

- We've tried to give the listener a sense of ambience, and acoustics.

Hope everyonee here will enjoy this.

Cheers!

Notes:

Review about this performance from Argenteumastrum.com:

This performance in this show is rather mediocre compared to others during this era and also married with rowdy audience and equipment problems.
After a rather flaccid We're Gonna Groove, where Plant's microphone cut out half way through the song, he apologizes and explains: "We've only had this PA for three nights."
The PA cuts out again several times in the show. Since I've Been Loving You was dropped from the set list and the organ solo is very short.
How Many More Times contains a sharp version of Ravel's Bolero and That's Alright and My Baby Left Me are played together (makes sense since they are the same song).
Plant tries all night to get the crowd "loose" and they do when they play their hit Whole Lotta Love (probably what most of the audience came to hear).

I personally find this show to actually be pretty good if you can look past the techincal difficulties with the p.a system (once you get past "We're Gonna Groove", the show and band start to pick up steam),the p.a problems are really beyond the bands control, so the bands performance shouldn't be faulted because of something that's beyond their control.

If the band played this show sloppily, then that's a different story, they would indeed be at fault for a bad performance, but something like faulty equipment shouldn't be held against the group.

I don't know if there was a specific reason or cause for the Baltimore Police Department for being present at concerts but according to several testimonies from fans who have attended Zeppelin's Baltimore shows in 1969 and 1970 the Baltimore police have been present at both shows and have indeed been physical with the crowd.

On the back cover art for Tarantura 2000's release "Live From Tear Gassed Place", a mention of the gig from Dave Lewis and Simon Pallet's "Led Zeppelin Concert File" is printed on the cover with Jimmy recalling an incident with a female fan from Baltimore:

A Girl In Baltimore asked me if she could come backstage and watch the show from there.

I thought this was the usual line from a girl just wanting to hang around with us.

So I said: "Why don't you go and sit in your seat and watch us?"

She said: "Because last time at this place, the cops tear-gassed the place, and I'm frightened of being out there."

That's the sort of tension we keep finding. There's such a lack of understanding and trust between the audience and the police.

For those that may not know, there are 3 known audience recording tape sources in circulation, and one piece of film footage of the performance (2 minutes of silent colour 8mm film footage).

The first and second tape sources of this concert are fair to good quality audience recordings, and are quite incomplete, the 3rd tape source is currently the most superior sounding recording of all the tape sources in circulation and the most complete.

The 3rd tape source sounds like it was taped very close to the stage, and has a pretty decent mix of the instruments, although Roberts vocals are the most dominant (when the p.a is actually working).

The reason we decided to work from a boot release instead of a low gen tape source of the 3rd tape source is because we actually prefered the sound quality of the Apple release over the low gens, it has more clairity to it and we thought it could really benefit from slight tweaking here and there.

What we've done to make this project:

- We've tried to balance the instruments as much as possible, and add things to the mix the original was lacking (more low end, more clarity for the rest of the instruments, bring out hidden things in the recording like cheers and audience banter).

- We've tried to balance the volume (originally the first disc was running too hot, and the second disc was running too low).

- We've tried to bring out the acoustics of the venue as best we can.

In regards to the title:

The title idea came to use while we were reading the review of this show posted on Argenteumastrum.com, it was their saying that the bands performance of "We're Gonna Groove" was "Flacid", and that got the ball rolling on the title choice.

The band (particularly Robert) were having extreme trouble projecting themselves throughout the night because of the dysfunctional p.a system, so we came up with the title "Projectile Dysfunction" from that review.

We thought it sounded clever, and made a connection to the performance in some way, so we thought we'd use it.

Hope everyone here will enjoy this.

Cheers

Notes:

I'd like to start off my notes by quoting a eview about the performance from Argenteumastrum.com because I feel he has summed up the performance nicely:

Another one of the really good shows from the 1970 European tour. Robert's voice is amazing as always in 1970 and the band plays some really intense music.
Jimmy's quiet riff intro to Heartbreaker before leading the band in full force is quite dramatic and the not yet recorded Since I've Been Loving You is very passionate and intense.
Dazed And Confused is very compact and played brilliantly, especially by Jimmy, whose playing is fast and fluid in front of the wall of rhythm created by Jones and Bonham.
The How Many More Times medley is great and Robert leads the band through a pastiche of great oldies before closing the show with a great, 1970 pre-medley version of the sole encore Whole Lotta Love.
What makes this recording so exciting it is a only known live rendition to Living Loving Maid. Just right after the last notes of Heartbreaker Plant segued into "With a purple umbrella ..." lyrics but shortly after he said: "I think we're all getting a bit loose!" We know he hated that one so this recording is so exciting for making listening to this song live!

To echo some of the statements that are posted on Argenteumastrum, this show is indeed an excellent performance and recording, it starts out a little rough at the beginning (smoothes out by the time you get to "I Can't Quit You Baby"), and has some brief moments of distortion, but is an overall enjoyable performance.

The recording sounds like it was taped at a slight distance from the stage, but the taped was indeed able to capture all the instruments evenly, with a nice balance.

This recording kind of reminds me of Raleigh, (4-8-70), because both recordings were taped at a distance from the stage, both have a slight echo to them, and a sort of sharpness to the instruments (like the drums). I remember reading in posts about the Raleigh performance that the sharpness in the sound quality is due to the venue having concrete floors, it's possible that the sharpness in the Hamburg tape is also due to the venue having concrete floors as well.

What we've done to make this project:

- We tried to balance the instruments in the recording as best we could. Originally the bass and cymabals were the most dominant instruments on the tape.

- We've tried to reduce some of the distortion that was on the recording as best we could.

- We've tried to bring out some of the acoustics of the venue to try and capture the experience of being there as best we could.

- We've tried to bring out things that were buried in the recording like crowd comments, and cheers.

- We've tried to reduce tape hiss as best we could.

Notes about the title:

For those that may wonder why we chose such an odd, (or what some might consider to be "corny") name like "Hamburger Helper" for the title of our project, I'll try to explain how we came up with the title, and why we stuck with it.

For every Zeppelin project we work on, we always try to come up with a title that somehow references that show.

It could be something to do with the culture of that part of the world, something to do with their history, or sometimes we just use a Plantation from that show.

For this particular performance, we had a bit of trouble coming up with a suitable, and catchy title.

We did research on both German, and Hamburg's history to try and find something we could make reference to, and we did find somethings of interest, like Hamburg was severely bombed during WWII, and the British occupied the city during the war, giving us the idea to call the show "British Occupation", but it didn't really pack the punch we wanted.

We then dug into pop culture references involving Germany, and we found a few things there too, but nothing really panned out there either.

So when those options didn't work, we then tried to see if we could draw influence from something that Plant said during the show, and that turned out to be a bigger source of inspiration then what we found in German history.

Plant makes a couple of great Plantations during this show that we could've used for a title (i.e: "It's Very Naughty To Be Nice"), but there was a plantation during the show that got the ball rolling for the final title choice.

During the show, Plant asks "Is that guy selling Hamburgers?", and that just kind of got the ball rolling on us coming up with "Hamburger Helper".

The great thing about Zeppelin, and the bootlegs is that you can have fun with them, the band never really took themselves too seriously, so you can improvise with things like title names, you just can't do that with other bands (i.e: Pink Floyd), because they take themselves too seriously.

Hightlights of this show are:

- I Can't Quit You Baby
- Heartbreaker
- White Summer/Black Mountain Side
- Thank You
- How Many More Times

Hope everyone here will enjoy this.

Cheers

Notes:

The 2nd show of the band's Fifth U.K tour, this show doesn't feature the 1st ever live performances of songs the band had previously not attempted on stage before (i.e: "Since I've Been Loving You", and "Thank You"), but this recording is the first live recording to capture those previously unplayed songs.

While I was working on this show, I came across an interesting bit of trivia, for those that may not know, this show actually takes place on Elvis Presley's birthday.

The next day, the band would play their infamous Royal Albert Hall show (January, 9th, 1970), which took place on Jimmy's birthday.

I just found that kind of interesting that they played a show on Elvis' birthday (a musician the band really reverred), and that the next day they played a show on Jimmy's birthday.

I'd like to quote from a review about the bands performance from Argenteumastrum.com:

This recording is very distant and dull but still rather clearly listenable in quiter moments. The problem is that this tape lacks most of bottom end so the sound is very thin.

A killer show! Robert's voice is in great shape and the band tear through the set, and include what is probably the first ever performance of Since I've Been Loving You, with different lyrics and a different arrangement but still exciting.
"We've got an LP coming out in three months, and it's called Led Zeppelin 19.
We're just gonna keep putting them out!" Plant jokes while he's introducing a new material.
Near the end he also jokes more: "Tonto turned into a door and the Lone Ranger shot his knob off!" according to a joke that he has been trying to tell earlier in the concert.
The encores destroy the crowd after the gutsy How Many More Times.

I understand the punchline of that "Lone Ranger" joke, I just don't particularly find it all that funny.

What we've done to make this project:

This project was a bit of a difficult tape to work with, it was hard trying to find a balance in the instruments without making one instrument or musician dominate over the others, but we do hope that everyone here enjoys what we've done to the tape.

It was also quite hard to work with because the tape suffers from periods of distortion in the channels due to Jimmy's guitar work, it's slightly peaking, it was hard trying to balance the instruments, create an ambiant sound to the recording, and try to buffer out some of the distortion in the recording, we did the best we could, and we hope that everyone here likes what we've done.

So to summerize, we've done the following things to make this project:

- We've tried to bring out things that were missing in the raw recording (low end), and have tried to balance the instruments as best we can.

- We've tried to reduce some of the distortion in the channels as best we could.

- We've tried to bring out as much of a feeling of ambiance as best we could.

- We've tried to bring out things that were buried under the raw recording (clapping, cheering, commentary) as best we could.

- We've tried to reduce as much tape hiss as possible.

- We've given the recording a gentle volume boost, I apologize if the volume is a little low in the mix, we tried to make the recording a little louder but that made it run a little hot, and caused distortion, so we figured the best thing to do was to give it a lighter touch than a heavy handed one.

In regards to the title name:

We decided that since we were dedicating this project to the artist Banksy, that we'd try to find a way to make a reference to the band, and to graffiti.

So we came up with "Bristol Bombers", "Bombing" is a graffiti reference to painting, and another reference to a Zeppelin is "Bomber".

Hope everyone here will enjoy this.

Cheers!

Notes:

An excellent recording and performance that was originally broadcasted on "Musicrama" on November, 1st, 1969, and rebroadcasted in December of 2007, to commemorate the O2 Reunion performance.

This concert is the 1st show to debut tracks from "Led Zeppelin II", the first live performances of "Heartbreaker", "What Is And What Should Never Be", and "Moby Dick", although, the last two tracks have not surfaced, making this show incomplete.

As I previously stated, this concert was broadcasted on the radio back in 1969, but apparently no one bothered to record it back then, leaving it sort of forgotten, that is, until the show was rebroadcasted, but apparently, the FM broadcast is not the only recording of this show said to exist.

According to Mojo Magazine's "Led Zeppelin: Classic, Rare, And Unseen", the band had also recorded this show, possibly to use for either their own personal use, or possibly a future live album.

To quote from the magazine:

"One of 2 shows (the other being the famous London Lyceum gig 2 days later) at which the band previewed a new setlist based around material from Led Zeppelin II.
Amoung the songs played live for the first time that night were "Heartbreaker", "Moby Dick", and "What Is And What should Never Be".
The band recorded the gig but neither official, nor bootleg versions have ever surfaced."

- Jean-Pierre Leloir

The show starts out kind of rough, but finds it's groove by the time the band get into "I Can't Quit You Baby".

What we've done to make this project:

- We've tried to balance the instruments as much as possible, originally the guitar, (some of) the vocals, and cymbals were the most dominant in the mix, drowning out the bass, so we've tried to make each instrument as present as we can.

- We've tried to create a feeling of ambiance, and a sense of the venue as much as we can.

- We've tried to bring out things that were originally buried in the recording (cheers, clapping, commentary), one thing I noticed after remastering the recording is the faint squeak of Bonham's bass pedal, I couldn't hear that until we started working on this project.

- We've tried to reduce as much tape hiss as possible.

- We've given the recording a gentle volume boost, the volume of the raw recording was not too low, but it could've been a little louder because there are moments where the sound drops off (i.e: Plant's distant vocals), we hope it isn't too loud for everyone here.

Highlights of this show are:

- I Can't Quit You Baby
- Heartbreaker (the very first performance is definitely a highlight to this concert).
- Dazed And Confused
- White Summer/Black Mountain Side
- You Shook Me
- How Many More Times

Hope everyone here will enjoy this.

Cheers!

BABE RUTH - First Base (1972, Harvest)
