Volume 4 of the DS Archives takes us to North Texas and an outstanding show in Dallas 2 months into the “Born To Run” Tour.

About six weeks ago I was able to upgrade this show from my own archives via a relatively low generation source.
While that release was a decent material upgrade to the source in general circulation, I felt it only took the show a notch up from “collectors only”.
With this release out of the DS Archives we take another leap forward to extremely enjoyable territory even for the casual fan.

While still having some issues in the actual recording process and the limitations of the equipment used at the time, this release has some big advantages over my previous release. We have a big material upgrade with more dynamics and up front sound, lots of punch and clarity, very little hiss and most importantly for the very first time, 40 years after the show we finally get to hear 3 minutes of near perfection with the inclusion of "Growin' Up". It has not appeared on any previous releases of this show. This is not a new recording source but a lower generation, most likely 2nd.

The tapes had no venue or city noted on them and were misdated as September 15th. Originally, with the inclusion of “Growin’ Up”, I didn’t recognize it as Dallas and thought it was likely another show from early in the tour and I honestly thought the quality was too good to be Dallas. Having recently worked on my own copy of Dallas, once I heard “E Street Shuffle” it was easy to properly date. Our other missing song, “She’s The One”, is not included here but there doesn’t appear to be any noticeable break between “E Street Shuffle” and “Born To Run”. I have concluded that this is most likely the entire show and "She's The One" was dropped for this performance. The taper did an excellent job capturing the entire show with 3 tape flips, 2 being in places making it possible for seamless splices and one between songs. Since we now have "Growin' Up", I don't really see a reason why the taper would have missed all of "She's The One". We will likely never know for sure unless the taper and master tapes surface.

Early on Dallas was not one of Bruce's strongest fan bases, one can look at my first Bruce show in 1978 as evidence, being re-located from the 10,000 seat Convention Center Arena to the more modest sized 2,500 seat Theater, the same venue we have here. A re-location that couldn’t have worked out better for me being re-located to the front row of the “suicide seats”, musically speaking it was a life changing event. I have plenty of friends in my hometown that are as passionate about Bruce’s music as anyone I know and that level of passion comes through loud and clear with this 1975 show.

With the much improved quality we get a clearer picture of the intensity and energy bringing the crowd to a frenzy on multiple occasions. From the opening notes of "Incident On 57th Street", a version here I have listened to again and again never tiring of it, to the closing notes of "Carol", the audience reciprocates the energy again and again.

Thanks go out to a number of folks that helped get this into your hands, from those that have been in touch with Dan for years and in turn put me in touch with him...IvannF, EarlMv, Oats1jvo to E from JEMS for the continued use of the NAK DR-1.
The biggest thanks to Dan for making his archives available for the enjoyment of us all...

July 11, 1973

WBCN-FM--- FMMR > R > CD > Eac > Wav > Flac (show id: 180359

Recorded by the legendary Neil Cronin and copied in a trade in the mid 70's to two Sony PR-150 reels for Taper Pat. Mastered to cd by Matt Smith --- R >apogee mini me (24/96) > apogee mini dac (monitoring) > wavelab 5.0 (dithered to 20/44) > CD (thanks a ton guys!!!) @

1 Intro > Lively Up Yourself
2 400 Years
3 Stir it Up
4 Slave Driver
5 Stop that Train
6 Kinky Reggae
7 Concrete Jungle
8 Get up Stand Up > Outro (DJ Banter)

notes:

@ a little background on this gem. i saw this version of this show on one of Taper Pat's lists and asked for a copy. I believe Matt had part of it and Pat had the rest of it, and then they put it together and sent me a copy. so grateful my friends! new wailers sources of this quality are truly rare and just wonderful. despite the minor blemishes on all copies that come from the set up and station, this is a joy to listen to and i don't think this will get any better. maybe someday we'll see a transfer from the mr or prefm source but that it has taken this long to get this source out, I'm not counting on it.

1st US performance - great show - overall, very enjoyable sound
of course it still has the slight monitor and / or equipment noise and perhaps some fm interference that are present on the commonly available sources (faint hum or buzz and occasional slight crackle?)

morever, we have had a copy with unknown generation
and then in 2005 emerged a 3rd gen tape. i really enjoy it but it was edited
by a person with little experience. i believe they did a nice job with
what they had but there are a few differences between sources:

* this source is a touch longer. it has more of the preshow recorded (bob's short intro). both are complete however.

* the 3rd gen tape has it's volume boosted which also boosts
the volume of the blemishes and crowd. as a result, i believe this
source has a more mellow sound and feel overall.

* the 3rd gen tape sounds tampered with, it has had some "equalizing": it sounds and feels a little unnatural while this seems to have a more steady sound and feel to it. this new source has a fuller range and dynamic of instruments and vocals. in other words, the equalizing seems to both amplify and bury the music resulting in a less authentic and pleasing experience for me.
the edited tape version sounds more tinny and has less warmth than the unedited reel version.

* i can understand the dilemma of to edit or not: i think we need both. while
editing major issues can move toward restoration, it can also distort the actual sound of the show. editing also results in irreversible changes preventing continual improvements or remasters as individual skill and technology improve. it also reflects and embodies the subjective preferences of the editor which is very risky. still if a version can be enhanced to make the listening experience
as enjoyable as it can be at that time, that's nice to have until even better upgrades are possible. I believe it is ideal to have a "raw" or unedited version in order to both preserve the music and allow for the best possible long term improvements.

While I don't think you will be disappointed by either source, especially given the band and what's generally available from them, imo, it's critical that we get this source and upgrade into general circulation.

Thanks again Taper Pat and Matt Smith for this lovely version!!! you guys just jam!!!

from cassette master with a few short splices from a different edit of the same master plus
another taper's 1st gen. source that had the tape flip in a different place.
You'll have to listen very carefully to hear the transitions and it is now the entire show without any cut songs.

Disc 1: 56:23 - main set:
01 [05:26] Positive Vibration
02 [03:46] Dem Belly Full
03 [06:05] Concrete Jungle
04 [05:04] Rebel Music
05 [03:58] War!
06 [01:45] > No More Trouble
07 [04:50] Heathen
08 [03:26] Easy Skanking
09 [04:37] I Shot The Sheriff
10 [07:12] No Woman No Cry
11 [09:52] Jammin'

Disc 2: 25:45 - encores:
02 [06:19] Lively Up Yourself
03 [05:58] Get Up Stand Up
04 [03:36] > Punky Reggae Party
05 [09:52] > Exodus

Some microphone handling noises, level changes and minor dropouts were eliminated or minimized seamlessly and this now sounds way better than previous versions of this show. I consider this to be possibly the best sounding audience Bob Marley recording that I have heard. Check the samples to judge the sound for yourself.thanks to Dime users chkorch, wailertape and scottsays (by way of pantagruel) for supplying the various sources that make up this remaster.Info for primary cassette master source: Nakamichi CM300 microphones with CP4 shotgun capsules > Nakamichi 550 cassette deck master > Dat > CD.

No equalization or noise reduction was used in the mastering process.

Transfer: CD's received in trade from the Dime users mentioned above > Macintosh with Digidesign AudioMedia III card > Pro Tools (nomalization, minor "nip & tuck" edits and tracking) > AIFF > xACT (Flac level 8 files with sector boundaries verified). md5 file created with checkSum+.
