Tracklist:
1. Sunrise - 1977-11-02 -  Field House - Seneca College - Toronto, ON, Canada
Hint:
One of only two original songs this band member wrote and performed with the Grateful Dead
Answer:
Field House - Seneca College - Toronto, ON, Canada - November 2, 1977
Sunrise" was played 30 times, in 1977 and 1978, debuting on 5/1/77 in New York, and taking its bow on 9/16/78 in Egypt.
By 1978, Donna's "From The Heart Of Me" was the original song she sang most in concert, into 1979.

2. Crazy Fingers - 1976-07-13 - Orpheum Theatre - San Francisco, CA
Hint:
This song would have a six year absence from the repertoire, 1976-1982
Answer:
Orpheum Theatre - San Francisco, CA - July 13, 1976
From Blues For Allah, this song was played often in 1976 (and at half of the shows in 1975), then dropped until it returned in 1982.
In 1985, it was back in the repertoire for good.

3. Comes A Time - 1971-10-30 - Taft Auditorium - Cincinnati, OH
Hint:
In the lineup 1971-1972, then sporadically 1976-1994.
Answer:
Taft Auditorium - Cincinnati, OH - October 30, 1971
Comes A Time appeared, and was played quite frequently, in 1971, running into 1972.
It was then dropped completely, to return in 1976 when the Dead hit the road again in June.

4. Estimated Prophet - 1977-05-04 - The Palladium - New York, NY
Hint:
A new Weir-Barlow song, played at most shows in 1977, and consistently until 1995.
Answer:
The Palladium - New York, NY - May 4, 1977
Estimated Prophet debuted on 2/26/77, and was played at most shows in 1977, and was a constant second set presence from 1977 onward,
usually linked to Eyes Of The World, and less freqeuntly Terrapin Station or He's Gone.

5. Dupree's Diamond Blues - 1994-10-13 - Madison Square Garden - New York, NY
Hint:
An song that was in the lineup in 1969, 1977-1978, and then frequently in the mid-1980s, then less frequently/rarely in the late 1980s and 1990s.
Answer:
Madison Square Garden - New York, NY - October 13, 1994
This was the first live performance of Dupree's in four years, since 3/26/90, the version included on Dozin At The Knick.

6. Feel Like A Stranger - 1986-04-19 - Berkeley Community Theatre - Berkeley, CA
Hint:
One of Bob's Weir's biggest jam-vehicle songs.
Answer:
Berkeley Community Theatre - Berkeley, CA - April 19, 1986
Debuted in 1980, "Feel Like A Stranger" soon became a hotly anticipated show-opener, with a jam akin to that of "Shakedown Street."

7. Dark Star - 1969-04-20 - Clark University - Worcester, MA
Hint:
The Dead's most important improvisational song, performed here just weeks after it definitive live recording.
Answer:
Clark University - Worcester, MA - April 20, 1969
Dark Star" was played sporadically throughout the Dead's 30 year touring career, with some years seeing it played nearly every other show, including 1969.
This version, like all of them in the first half of 1969, is very reminsicent of the version from Live/Dead.

8. China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider - 1973-03-16 - Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum - Uniondale, NY
Hint:
Joined in 1969, these two songs were always played together with a handful of exceptions until 1995.
Answer:
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum - Uniondale, NY - March 16, 1973
One of the most important combinations of songs in the Grateful Dead's repertoire.
Aside from the many acoustic versions of "I Know You Rider" in 1970, these two songs were joined together virtually every time they were played.

9. The Music Never Stopped - 1978-05-07 - Field House - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Troy, NY
Hint:
Usually a first-set-closer from 1978 onward (but not always).
Answer:
Field House - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - Troy, NY - May 7, 1978
The versions on 1978 often had expansive, powerful crescendos that were a hallmark of this year's arrangement of "The Music Never Stopped."

10. He's Gone > Jam - 1981-02-26 - Uptown Theatre - Chicago, IL
Hint:
This second-set Garcia-Hunter song often led into long, open-ended, bluesy jams.
Answer:
Uptown Theatre - Chicago, IL - February 26, 1981
This is from the first night of a three night run in Chicago, which was considered as possible Dick's Picks by Dick Latvala.

11. Uncle John's Band > U.S. Blues - 1974-07-25 - International Amphitheatre - Chicago, IL
Hint:
A double dose of Garcia-Hunter.
Answer:
International Amphitheatre - Chicago, IL - July 25, 1974
These two songs were -two of the more popular singles from two highly-regardded albums,
with "Uncle John's Band" from Workingman's Dead and "U.S. Blues" from Mars Hotel.

12. Foolish Heart - 1989-07-10 - Giants Stadium - East Rutherford, NJ
Hint:
The first single from the Dead's final studio record.
Answer:
Giants Stadium - East Rutherford, NJ - July 10, 1989
Performed here the second night of a two night stand at Giants Stadium, this Foolish Heart has a nice, long, concise jam.

13. Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circumstance - 1979-10-31 - Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum - Uniondale, NY
Hint:
A Weir-Barlow twofer.
Answer:
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum - Uniondale, NY - October 31, 1979
These songs were joined together (mostly) until 1986, after which on "Saint Of Circumstance" was played, not too often.

14. My Brother Esau - 1984-04-14 - Hampton Coliseum - Hampton, VA
Hint:
A short-lived Weir-Barlow number, only in the repertoir for four years.
Answer:
Hampton Coliseum - Hampton, VA - April 14, 1984
One of Weir's quirkier songs, a song that was only played live by the Grateful Dead from 1983 until 1987.

15. New Potato Caboose - 1969-06-08 - Fillmore West - San Francisco, CA
Hint:
A rare Lesh-Petersen number.
Answer:
Fillmore West - San Francisco, CA - June 8, 1969
This is the final rendition of New Potato Caboose, a song that was a centerpiece of a lot of shows in late 1967 and in 1968.

16. The Other One > Jam > I Know You Rider - 1973-03-31 - War Memorial - Buffalo, NY
Hint:
After 1969, this song (well, one of these songs; there are two in this segment) was rarely separated from its partner.
Answer:
War Memorial - Buffalo, NY - March 31, 1973
China Cat Sunflower and I Know You Rider were joined at nearly every one of their performances from 1969 to 1995, aside from acoustic versions of Rider in 1970.

17. St. Stephen - 1968-10-12 - Avalon Ballroom - San Francisco, CA
Hint:
Described by Jerry as a "musical policeman".
Answer:
Avalon Ballroom - San Francisco, CA - October 12, 1968
This perfromance is from a period when Bob and Pigpen were in and out of the lineup, with the band considering moving forward without that twosome.

18. Blow Away - 1989-05-27 - Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Stadium - Oakland, CA
Hint:
One of Brent's final songs with the Grateful Dead, debuted in 1988.
Answer:
Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Stadium - Oakland, CA - May 27, 1989
This is from the AIDS benefit concert, which also featured a set by John Fogerty with Bob and Jerry as part of his backing band.

19. Ship Of Fools - 1978-07-08 - Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison, CO
Hint:
From 1974, and played regularly throughout the Grateful Dead's career.
Answer:
Red Rocks Amphitheatre - Morrison, CO - July 8, 1978
This Garcia-Hunter song was played from 1974-1995, and was a common song found mostly in the pre-Drums part of the second set.

20. Hell In A Bucket - 1994-06-26 - Sam Boyd Silver Bowl - Las Vegas, NV
Hint:
One of Weir-Barlow's most-played songs, played consistently from 1983-1995, and continuously through 2015 with all configurations of bands featuring Bob.
Answer:
Sam Boyd Silver Bowl - Las Vegas, NV - June 26, 1994
Hell in a Bucket debuted on 5/13/83 at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA, and was played usually mid/late first set in the early days,
before settling into its normal show-opener spot in the mid-80s.

21. Far From Me - 1983-04-13 - Patrick Gymnasium - University of Vermont - Burlington, VT
Hint:
Brent's second contribution to the Grateful Dead's repertoir.
Answer:
University of Vermont - Burlington, VT - April 13, 1983
This song was debuted on 3/30/80 at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ, just before the release of Go To Heaven.

22. You Don't Have To Ask - 1966-03-25 - Troupers Hall - Los Angeles, CA
Hint:
This song from 1966 only has a handful of known performances.
Answer:
Troupers Hall - Los Angeles, CA - March 25, 1966
Played exclusively in the first half of 1966, with words and music credited to the Grateful Dead.

23. China Doll - 1974-06-23 - Jai-Alai Fronton - Miami, FL
Hint:
"China Doll" (This likely was NOT the original hint, but is what now appears on the archive of this page.)
Answer:
Jai-Alai Fronton - Miami, FL - June 23, 1974
This song debuted on 2/9/73 at Stanford University, along with many other new songs, and although they recorded in 1973 for Wake Of The Flood, it was re-recorded in 1974 for Mars Hotel.

24. Black Throated Wind - 1973-10-23 - Metropolitan Sports Center - Bloomington, MN
Hint:
A Weir-Barlow song that disappeared for 16 years.
Answer:
Metropolitan Sports Center - Bloomington, MN - October 23, 1973
Debuting in 1972, Black-Throated Wind was played consistently from March 1972 until October 1974, and didn't return until March 16, 1990.

25. Operator - 1970-09-18 - Fillmore East - New York, NY
Hint:
The Pigpen original was played live only four times.
Answer:
Fillmore East - New York, NY - September 18, 1970
Appearing on American Beauty, Operator was played live for only four months, and only four times in those four months.

26. Althea - 1982-09-09 - Saenger Theatre - New Orleans, LA
Hint:
A Garcia-Hunter song from 1979.
Answer:
Saenger Theatre - New Orleans, LA - September 9, 1982
Played consistently from 1979-1995, Althea was played at the penultimate show on 7/8/95 in Chicago.

27. They Love Each Other - 1990-07-19 - Deer Creek Music Center - Noblesville, IN
Hint:
A Garcia-Hunter song that went through a massive change between 1974 and 1976.
Answer:
Deer Creek Music Center - Noblesville, IN - July 19, 1990
The 1973 (and one version in 1974) arrangement of TLEO was fast, with a fun bridge, but when the song returned to the repertoire in 1976
(with one version in 1975), it was in a much slower arrangement than it had been in 1973-1974.

28. Box Of Rain - 1972-12-31 - Winterland Arena - San Francisco, CA
Hint:
Aside from one live version two years earlier, this Phil original began to be played live in 1972.
Answer:
Winterland Arena - San Francisco, CA - December 31, 1972
Played live only in 1972 and 1973, this American Beauty opener was dropped from the repertoire until its triumphant return in Hampton, VA in 1986.

29. Lazy River Road - 1994-07-31 - The Palace - Auburn Hills, MI
Hint:
One of the last Garcia-Hunter songs.
Answer:
The Palace - Auburn Hills, MI - July 31, 1994
Played at 65 Grateful Dead 1993-1995, including the last-ever Grateful Dead show.

30. Uncle John's Band - 1977-09-29 - Paramount Theatre - Seattle, WA
Hint:
Played steadily 1969-1995, with two years exempted: 1976 and 1978.
Answer:
Paramount Theatre - Seattle, WA - September 29, 1977
Uncle John's Band was played almost 350 times, and aside from 1976 (well, it WAS played as the encore on 12/31/76,
but that was after midnight so was technically 1977...) and 1978, it had a consistent place in the repertoire.

Track02 - band introduction 01:26
Track03 - Twelve and More Blues 10:01
Track04 - Ain Temouchant 11:15
Track05 - Ginger Spice 07:48
Track06 - UT 09:44
Track07 - Abass & Ginger talk 02:16
Track08 - Why? 05:42

Ginger Baker - Drums.
Abass Dodoo - Congas. (Bodyguard?)
Pee Wee Ellis - Saxophone.
Alec Dankworth - Electric & Upright Bass.

Note: This show came to me on a single cdr with two files. The break is between tracks 05 and 06. It sounds like maybe a couple of seconds of track06 are missing.

Here's what amarilio said in his note to go along with the show concerning the encore: This tune required the audience to shout the titular word when prompted by breaks in the
1-2-3/1-2-3/1-2-3 beat. That was the closest Baker came to producing a smile tonight. Just the fact that he was @ The Iridium, alive ? and still quite capable on his instrument,
was enough of a reason for the mostly over 50 crowd to go home happy (and some short of $350!).

The Ginger Baker shows were announced a few weeks after I saw the Beware of Mr. Baker bewareofmrbaker.com/
documentary. It was interesting but very sad in many ways. I figured, if I missed these I would not expect
another opportunity. I got tickets and went with a friend who saw the first Cream shows at the Fillmore. We
had dinner and were able to get great seats. We sat next to a couple from Sea who came down for the shows.
They said thet ran into Ginger at the airport and had the opportunity to talk with him. He seemed to be his
angry surly self but looked realy frail and old. They were actually concerned about him and asked if they
could get him anything. He said, yeah, he needed $2 million. Show starts and Ginger comes out with his
usual scowl. Rest of band is solid and its a good show but Ginger looks tired and short of breath. He
talks about having 2 shows and dying on stage. Many people laugh and the guy being me thinks it is the
funniest thing he has ever heard (the louds claps are him behind me and he also complained when I sent a text
to a taper friend outside. what an idiot). About 45 minutes in he says something about not feeling well and
needing a break. We all look and wonder if this is it and whether the night is done. After 15 minutes they
come back and complete the set. There are more death and dying comments but it was a good show. It just is
sad to see a rock legend who is a shell of his former self.?

Ginger Baker’s recognition as a drummer began during the Graham Bond Organisation in the early sixties. The band toured with The Who, The Troggs, The Moody Blues and Chuck Berry, attracting press interest for their outrageous behaviour and riotous fun. In 1964 Baker was considered ‘one of Britain’s great drummers’ by Melody Maker journalist, Chris Welch.

While Baker was impressing music journalists, he was also attracting attention from other musicians, one of them being Eric Clapton. The two met, jammed, saw one another play in their then current bands, added bass player Jack Bruce and formed Cream. In Baker’s own words they created ‘instant magic’ and began touring earning £45 per show, to later smashing box office records previously set by The Beatles.

After Cream, came Blind Faith. Baker and Clapton were joined by Steve Winwood and Rick Grech to make just one album. When Clapton and Winwood left to further their own projects, the remaining members went on to form jazz rock fusion band ‘Ginger Baker’s Airforce’ adding sax, flute, organ and extra percussion to the band.

During a trip to Africa Baker found himself moved and inspired by Nigerian radio. Despite the war zone in that part of the country he was adamant about visiting Nigeria and pushed to set up a recording studio in Lagos. When it opened as ‘Batakota Studios’ Paul McCartney arrived with Wings to record part of his ‘Band on the Run’ album. Music aside, Africa gave Baker a wonderful climate to live in and a healthier lifestyle than that of rock n roll and touring. He discovered his love for polo and rally driving.

Baker’s work with Airforce and friendship with Fela Kuti pathed the way for Baker’s next musical project: to work with African musicians. A live album was recorded in Abbey Road studios under the name of ‘Fela Ransome - Kuti and Africa 70 with Ginger Baker’.

He then went on to form English rock group The Baker Gurvitz Army in which Baker was also involved with providing extra sounds for their debut album. The wheel spins from his Jensen FF were used for their song ‘Mad Jack’. He also rode a wheeled swivel chair backwards down a flight of stairs for a second track on their debut album. After setting up a second recording studio, this time in North London, Baker formed ‘Energy’. Since then he’s performed at various live events such as Verona’s Percussion Summit and his own unmissable 70th birthday party with special guest, Steve Winwood, at Camden’s Jazz Café.

His latest project Ginger Baker's Jazz Confusion, starring, Alec Dankworth on bass and Abass Dodoo on percussion, made its 2012 debut at Ronnie Scott's Club in London. Their show sold out 4 times, bringing the crowd that powefull fusion of Jazz and African rhythms.
