GCB's notes:

I'd last seen The Who at the Oval in 1971 so I was buggered if I was going to sit still during the whole show in order to record, so the intrepid Fryeman stepped up the plate and offered to do the deed. He stood stock still the whole night and didn't even clap.

The sound was really good where we were situated, not in the front rows but only about 10 rows back from the front. More or less centre, once the band came on everyone stood so the seats were a royal waste of time.

A great show, time may have stopped them from leaping around quite so much and Roger's voice is occasionally a bit croaky, but Mr Starkey is a great drummer (are you listening Kenny Jones) and Palladino does a good impersonation of the OX's lines and I got off on this show as much as if the old lineup from 1971 was still playing.

We were well pleased, this proved to be a very exciting and energetic gig. Pete shredded his fingers during Won't Get Fooled Again, so we were treated to Roger's rendition of the Johnny Cash classic Ring Of Fire whilst the flailing one was receiving some first aid backstage. Still did a number of encores and it was all capped off with a lovely Tea and Theatre.

A magic night and the sound has come out nicely, the crowd were well behaved and not a lot of noise near us apart from some girl shouting at Pete about 6 rows back to get on with it.

This is NOT the version on the traders database which is graded B+, I've not heard the other version, but the consensus of our group is that we would grade this recording higher than that, an A?. Well, it's all subjective anyway, but it sounds pretty good……

An absolutely fantastic release. This configuration was sequenced sometime between June and July 1986 - although it is not the final configuration. I can only imagine what would have happened had this actually been released, as it is O{+> and the Revolution at their most creative and at their imaginative peak. Firstly, you have to remember that Sign O' The Times (the album) hadn't been released or thought about yet, so the forget how the tracks sound on the Sign O' The Times album. Visions is a beautiful solo piano piece by Lisa, Nevaeh Ni Ecalp A (A Place In Heaven backwards) is simply an intro to Dream Factory. Train is an absolutely amazing song and it's a crime it hasn't been released. Interlude is Wendy's guitar solo piece. Strange Relationship is the 'Revolution' version. I Could Never Take The Place is slightly extended during the guitar portion of the song. A Place In Heaven is Lisa's vocal. And finally 'All My Dreams'  - surely if there's one song that sums up O{+>, Wendy & Lisa's work together at it's most inspirational, imaginative and most clever - it's that. The material was obviously too good to shelve after the Revolution disbanded, so it's understandable O{+> chose to use some tracks on Sign O' The Times. An absolute must have album for any O{+> fan. The packaging for this disc is brilliant. The booklet includes a nice 'story of the Dream Factory', taken from The Vault. Sheer class. -Original

Comments:
I've had tapes of the original BBC broadcast of the festival ever since it aired back in 1985.
There's a tape change after the first song as I recorded the entire festival broadcast and just used the tapes as and when they filled up (hey, I was kid and didn't know I'd be trading this stuff 23 years later!) but I've edited that out as much as possible.
Tommy Vance - the well respected DJ - popped up after "Wishing Well" to announce a break in the broadcast for the news, but I've edited that out so the music flows (I didn't record the news)
There's a swear/curse word, removed, rather brutely, by the BBC in the opening stages of "Highway Song" but there was nothing I could do about that!
Otherwise, all I've done is add a fade in and fade out at the ends of the show, and corrected the slight balance issue (my recorder in the 1980s favoured the left channel slightly) the rest is how it went out all those years ago.

Not sure of the title of the opening song, so help would be welcome.

With the recent appearance of some rare, vintage Chicago shows,

I thought I might upload a show I don't believe circulates very

commonly. I searched DIME and did not find this one so I did some

work on it and offer it here in the hope that it may prompt others

to share their rare or uncirculated Chicago shows as well. Plus, I

just like to share shows I have because, good or bad quality aside,

they are meant to be heard.

Unfortunately, this recording, while not hampered by audience

interference, sounds pretty bad. It's not hurtful to the ears but

it just doesn't sound very sonically pleasing at all. It's pretty

murky sounding and I'd give it a C or C+ rating. However, as I think

it doesn't circulate widely, I thought it would be nice to share it.

I received this show in trade on CD around 2004 with a batch of

other fairly uncirculated Chicago shows, most of which are similarly

poor sounding. The shows I received are from concerts performed between

1971 and 1980. As time permits, I'll try to upload additional ones.

I do not know the generations this show may have under it's belt

other than the CD copy I received so I can only offer the following:

CD in trade>Extracted to WAV to my computer>FLAC Level 6 via

Audacity>You...

Upon listening to various tracks, it seemed that the recording

was a bit fast. So, in Audacity, I slowed the speed by 2% which seemed

to help and more accurately represent the actual show.

With the shows I've uploaded in the past, I've always asked that

no one re-up them unless they can make a marked difference in my

offering. Well, I tried a few things in Audacity and I can tell you

that I don't think I could find a way to make this recording sound

any better without sacrificing the audio integrity. So I left it

in it's original state except for splitting the intro from the first

track and the speed correction as indicated. If anyone can enhance

the sound in any way and re-upload, please do!!

Share, enjoy (if that is possible with this recording) and please

do not convert to lossy formats save for yourself...
