The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Recordings for "Pop North",

(recorded at) BBC Broadcasting House, Great Portland Place, London.1967.01.30

(broadcast on)BBC “Pop North” for BBC Light Programme. 1967.02.09

01. Hey Joe (3:51)

02. Rock Me Baby (1:43)

BBC radio broadcast> reel to reel> Wav

From me to you! Well from The Johnny Kidd fan club to you!

Here we have the first known recordings from the Jimi Hendrix Experience for BBC radio. To be exact, nearly two of the three track reportedly recorded from this session. What a joy it is to hear this session for the first time [it brought me quivers down the back bone and left me shaking all over!] as it has been lost to us since it was broadcast. That the JHE were no strangers to the BBC at this time is a known fact but all previous visits had been for Top Of The Pops Recording sessions.

Often we overlook the wonderful research done by some people in the early days of Hendrix collecting, here we owe a debt of gratitude to Caesar Glebbeek who first reported this session way back in Univibes #7, that’s late 1992!

Of the three songs recorded that day, Hey Joe (3:40), Rock Me Baby (2:40) and Foxy Lady (3:20) it is the latter that has still to turn up. From the two tracks we have, Rock Me Baby is cut short. The recording stops dead and it appears the reel to reel tape simply ran out. This would also explain the missing Foxy Lady from our found source.

The band’s debut Radio appearance was for the BBC Light Programme, a show called “Pop North” and was broadcast between 13:00 and 14:00 hours on the 9th February 1967.

The process for these broadcast from the BBC was not quite so straight forward and things are a little confusing due to a cancelled contract, re date schedule in this instance.

The JHE recording session took place on the 30th January 1967 at Broadcasting House, Portland Place, London. The three songs would have been supplied to the BBC Manchester Studio [Playhouse Theatre] for playback to a live audience and introduced at that session by Ray Moore. This on the 7th February 1967. It is this recording of the show that was then aired on the 9th February 1967.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Pacific Coliseum, Vancouver, BC, Canada 1968-09-07 AUD

lineage: unknown (most likely master or 1st gen) > CD > wav > flac

This fantastic late ´68 Hendrix recording was passed on to us by Colin, all thanks have to go to him. He received it on a CDR, and no exact lineage could be verified. Judging from the sound though, this must be very close to the master reel or cassette. Especially the last 3 tracks suffered from severe digital clicks, which were removed using Izotope RX spectral repair. The recording itself sounds very nice and well balanced although a bit distant. But it´s definitely one of the better late 1968 audience tapes.

Jimi and the band are in top form here at Pacific Coliseum, with some of the Hendrix family in attendance for the concert. Wonderful setlist, smoking renditions of Come On, Red House and Little Wing. What can I say....it´s a NEW Hendrix tape making the rounds..Here´s your copy!

Never sell, only trade, pass it on!

Jimi Hendrix – lead vocals, guitar

Mitch Mitchell – drums

Noel Redding – bass guitar, backing vocals

On February 18, 1969, the Jimi Hendrix Experience played the first of two shows at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The band had played the venue previously, on November 14, 1967, on a bill with Pink Floyd, the Nice, the Move and other sonically adventurous bands of the time. This time, however, the Experience would be the headliner, playing first on the 18th and again on the 24th to a sold-out house.

Jimi’s great talent had grown in the 15 months since the 1967 show. Regular touring had honed his free-form playing, while his extensive studio work had seen him develop into a brilliant composer and visionary producer. Unfortunately, escalating tensions between Hendrix and his band—bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell—had begun to take a toll on the group’s performances. A European tour from January 8 to 23 had been a mess. The band performed lethargically, and Hendrix was uneasy with the audiences’ requests for them to play their recent hit, “All Along the Watchtower.”

He was also unhappy that his manager, Mike Jeffrey, had sent a film crew along to record the event for a television special. Jeffrey had never asked for Jimi’s creative input on the project, and Hendrix was concerned about production matters. He was especially adamant that he be allowed to choose his own engineer for the upcoming Royal Albert Hall performance, going so far as to send a memo to his manager on the subject.

In fact, Jeffrey did have an ulterior motive. Beyond the television special, he was hoping the Europe shows would provide enough recorded material for a live album, which he hoped to release that June. Once the live album was out of the way, Jeffrey planned to get another studio album out of the Experience in time for the lucrative Christmas season.

The live album was paramount to Jeffrey’s plans, but the uneven performances on the European tour had made him concerned that he would have nothing satisfactory to release. Originally, the Royal Albert Hall performance was a one-night stand, on February 18. As a safeguard, Jeffrey booked the band for the second performance, on February 24.

Following the European tour, Jimi flew to New York City to oversee the construction of his studio, Electric Lady. While the trip gave him a reprieve from his problems with the Experience, the time away only served to exacerbate the tensions between them. There were further problems awaiting him when he returned to London. On February 17, while rehearsing at the Albert Hall, Hendrix became aggravated by the constant feedback created between his guitar and the PA system. The mobile recording unit hired for the event was also experiencing electronic interference that would make the recordings unusable.

Hendrix placed a call to Chas Chandler, his former manager, and asked him to come for assistance. “It was a shambles,” Chandler told John McDermott in his book, Hendrix: Setting the Record Straight. “I ended up running both shows for him, trying to get everything right. I hadn’t been ‘hired,’ I was there to help out a friend.”

Although the recording equipment problems with were worked out, no one could guarantee that Jimi’s guitar wouldn’t suffer from feedback. To minimize the possibility, two separate sound systems were used: one for the venue and another for the mobile recording unit. This is why Jimi can be seen singing into three microphones in footage from the concerts.

Despite the preparations, the February 18 show was a disaster. Jimi played brilliantly, but Redding and Mitchell were lifeless. Chandler was irate with them. “It truly was one of the worst shows I had ever seen,” he told McDermott. “Up until that point I had been a supportive of the group, because I thought that they made for a good unit. Now I felt it was time they got thrown out.”

Under the circumstances, the show gave Jeffrey little that he could use for a live album. Rehearsals were scheduled for the days before the February 24 show to try to salvage what little opportunity remained. As it turned out, the second show was much better. Although the band lacked the fire and energy they’d displayed at earlier shows like 1967's Monterey Pop Festival, they played brilliantly. Hendrix threw out his usual set list and instead performed three of his own blues songs: “Hear My Train a Comin’,” “Red House” and “Bleeding Heart.” The group turned in solid versions of “Little Wing,” Voodoo Chile” and “Foxey Lady,” as well.

And while Hendrix didn’t believe in giving encores, he gave one to the Albert Hall crowd, bringing out Traffic’s Dave Mason and Chris Wood and percussionist Rocki Dzidzornu to perform a stirring version of “Room Full of Mirrors.”

Oddly, for all the fireworks happening onstage, the audience was exceptionally polite. They remained seated and quiet, clapping politely, as if at the symphony. Perhaps it was down to the house lights: the film crew had asked to have them left on to provide enough light for the film stock. Under the circumstances, the audience might have felt more self-conscious than usual.

Not surprisingly, the shows were the last European performances by the Jimi Hendrix Experience. On March 30, the band began a lengthy U.S. tour that would see Hendrix make his celebrated stand at Woodstock, on August 18, with a new band, Gypsy, Sun and Rainbows. The Experience had already imploded two months before, on June 29 at the Denver Pop Festival.

Performing that night in Denver, Jimi didn’t hold back the news. “This is the last gig we’ll be playing together,” he said. The original Jimi Hendrix Experience was finished.

Source: Audience recording. 3rd gen.

This funky little recording comes from a cassette that I've had in my collection for more years than I care to remember, well probably since sometime around the 1990s. It's a pretty good show with the bonus of the two blues back to back. As for the sound, that's purely subjective so that depends on where your definition of listenable lands when it comes to Hendrix audience recordings. I'd call it expansive.

Jimi Hendrix live in Stockholm 1970 - 1CD - from Dutch radio w/ interview

Jimi Hendrix

Stora Scenen, Grona Lund

Tivoli Gardens

Stockholm, Sweden

August 31, 1970

DJ intro

Red House (complete)

Hendrix 8/31/70 interview

Come On (Part One) end snippet

Notes: In 1973 Dutch radio put together a nice retrospective of Jimi using some rare (at the time) material titled "Jimi Hendrix Jams." This must have been quite a thrill for Hendrix fans to hear these unheard gems. Over the years most of the music has been released officially, but this material from Stockholm has not been.

This is nothing new to collectors: The Dutch radio folk got ahold of the "guitar source" of this gig and used it for their program. It's the same source that's around today. But they did EQ it and added compression, etc. to bring out the sound.

Interspersed is a pre-gig interview with Jimi who sounds very tired. He had been up for about two days at this point, having played the Isle of Wight on the same day in the wee hours of the morning (even though the IOW gig is generally said to be from 8/30/70.)

Anyway the program is an interesting listen.

Some notes from Chris Dixon about the music here:

The opening 3 note figure of 'Red House' is followed by an atypical swipe up the neck, and a few stray crackles are evident. He prematurely uses the "I still got my guitar" after the first verse, then again in its usual place before the solo. He does some 'slapped' chords as fills during the second verse. The solo here is back to three 12 bar verses (after five at IOW) with the tone building to a more distorted aggressive one and Mitch pushing it toward double time. A high squeal as Jimi starts to sing the last verse prompts him to say "I think I better hurry up with that.." and there's a little radio interference evident at the end (though not as bad as the previous night, er ,morning).

'Come On (Pt 1)' was never an oft-played number, this last appeared at the Madison Square Garden show of 5/18/69 and at the jam during the Newport Festival the following month. This is the last time Jimi ever plays it. They may not have rehearsed it with Billy much, if at all, and the chromatic climb going into the solo is a little rough but Jimi seems to have fun with it, revisiting many of the licks from the Electric Ladyland track. The last solo is played high on the neck with the wah for a very stinging tone.

Jimi Hendrix

[Funkydrummer Stereo Merge and Cleanup]

07 - Message To Love

08 - Ezy Rider

09 - Machine Gun

10 - Star Spangled Banner

11 - Foxy Lady

12 - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)

13 - Purple Haze

Notes: The quality here is fantastic for a 1970 audience recording. Two decent sources of this show circulated for decades, each complementing each other. A few years back a third source popped up that is brilliant quality for the time. It caputures all the instruments clearly, including Cox's heavy bass. It's loud and upfront, and while a bit unbalanced at times, it's vibrant and gives you an idea of Hendrix's live sound in 1970 if you were out in the audience.

Funkydrummer on CTT took all three sources and worked his magic. Just before Hendrix's first solo during "Fire" the high quality sound kicks in and stays for most of the gig, sans "Lover Man," which the third source did not capture.

Brilliant show from Mr. Hendrix on this night. His spirits are good, really connecting with the audience and his playing is phenomenal. Some funny moments...the fan feraking out as "Fire" starts "Oh wow!!!" ... after "Hear My Train" someone yells "what can we give you?" Hendrix slyly replies "a joint" and a few seconds later several fly on to the stage. After "Red House," as Hendrix tunes up, he makes a golf(!) reference. "You have a 3-inch putt and you miss it" referencing the effort to tune up and make it just right. He also references Cambodia before "Machine Gun" where he U.S. suddenly had military operations at the time of this gig.

Some slight oddities on this night...while Hendrix never had a standard setlist, going from the Stars Spangled Banner into Foxy Lady was a rarity...as was Voodoo Child into Purple Haze, the latter's intro notes played in staccato fashion instead of more of the gliding start generally in live 1970 versions.

08. I Can't Turn You Loose (no Hendrix?)

1967-03-29

10. Remember (Five different takes, the six originally included on the "Are You Experienced?" album - removed)

I spent three days comparing this ones with the released versions, and was a pain because as many of you knows,

the Hendrix state has released almost every year (some times, two times on the same year) a compilation album.

Thanks to youtube, daylimotion and some (a lot of!) research (and very helpfull sites like

unofficial releases) i was able to compare this tracks with the ones released.

When the Jimi Hendrix state releases "unreleased studio material", they really mean it!

These words mean that these are unique recordings not bootleged or distributed before.

If you're a die-hard Hendrix fan you're invited to buy these compilations, as these really freatures *unreleased*

material. Seems they are only releasing what is uncirculated... If it was bootleged before, they

don't give much attention to it...

Jimi Hendrix & Larry Young

1969 (3/25/69 or 5/14/69 perhaps)

Record Plant Sessions,

New York City, NY, USA

Excellent quality.

We can't really be sure of the date here. I am seeding this again in the hope that more people can discover Larry Young, who has been described as the "John Coltrane" of the electric organ. A "Sheets of Sound" kind of comparison, if I may. There is only this and precious few performances with Tony Williams Lifetime, plus the few Santana/McLaughlin shows that document Larry outside of his officially released body of work of under 20 or so records.

Enjoy, and please, no crap about how this is not jazz. :-)

The following are the original notes from the seeder I got this from:

This set collects material recorded at Jimi's house on Traver Hollow Road in the summer of 1969.

Most were probably recorded on the 4-track machine that Eddie Kramer installed at Jimi's request; some are possibly recorded on 2-track.

The first 2 tracks on Disc 1 were recorded by Gerry Guida on a portable reel recorder.

Although this material has often been referred to as The Woodstock Rehearsals, much of this could never have been considered for inclusion at that show.

In addition, this isn't a "complete" Shokan collection;

Other recordings include the Ephron jams (ATM 193-194 "At His Best?") and possibly the jams with a 2nd guitarist that were collected on ATM 072-073 "Healing Power".

Portions of these recordings have previously appeared on the collectors' sets ATM 003 "The Woodstock Rehearsals", ATM 044 "Drinking Wine, Sipping Time" and ATM 072-073 "Healing Power". Some of those are upgraded here.

There's also little definite information regarding recording dates and personnel.

While most of these recordings are thought to be from August, some could also be from July or September.

The first 2 tracks were earlier thought to have been recorded in Beverly Hills in mid-1969; John McDermott and Gerry Guida recently confirmed that they were recorded on Guida's portable reel machine at the Shokan house.

There are two songs with vocals by Larry, Why I Sing the Blues and Ain't Got Nobody, where Jimi's playing is not evident.

The final block of material is just Jimi and Mitch. It has been speculated from the themes quoted in this section that it might come from after Woodstock, possibly early September, so it was placed last in the collection.

This set upgrades portions of material found on ATM 003 The Woodstock Rehearsals, ATM 044 Drinking Wine, Sipping Time and ATM 072-073 Healing Power.

More Shokan recordings are available on ATM 193-194 At His Best? (The Mike Ephron Sessions) and ATM 035 Apartment Jams / ATM 072-073 Healing Power (The so-called Taj Mahal Jams some sources list the recording date and location for the Apartment Jams [aka. the so-called "Taj Mahal Jams"] as Jimi's Apartment, New York City, NY 21.01.70, but it's more likely the recordings were made around the same time as the Woodstock Rehearsals at Jimi's House, Shokan, NY july-aug.1969.).
