lineage: audience recorded cassettes>?>CDR>EAC>FLAC

Notes: Decent, but, incomplete audience recording from Tales from Topographic Oceans tour. According to Forgotten Yesterdays, 'RSoG' and

'The Remembering' were NOT played, so this recording is only missing the encores of 'Roundabout' and 'Starship Trooper.'

The taper turned off his recorder between songs, so we miss the opening birdsong of CTTE, and the transitions between the other

songs. 'Ritual' cuts out after about 11 minutes. The audio is not bad, I'd rank it a B-/C+ - probably most for 'Tales' tour

completists.

05 A Saucerful Of Secrets

Total running time 53 mins 20 secs

A raw, mono transfer of Beechwoods' 4th gen cassette. I recorded in stereo then dropped the weaker channel on each side to create a mono recording. The left channel of side A of this tape is stronger and more dynamic than the right and the reverse is so on side B. There are no cuts in the music on side A. Side B begins with the part of Roger's introduction to A Saucerful Of Secrets when he says "You'll have to feel this one with us..". When adjusting the gain for the right channel of side B, I tried to achieve a reasonable match for the volume of the left channel on side A.

How does this tape compare to the 1st gen copies doing the rounds? The 1st gens all seem to originate from the same cassette to DAT transfer, whereas this 4th gen appears to be from an alternative source which is less degraded. In my view both lineages have their merits. One is not clearly better than the other and the 4th gen is surprisingly good.

Comments:

This is a great 2 LP set of Pink Floyd early BBC Broadcasts called Rhapsody in Pink: The Psychedelic Years., this is on Anderson Council Records. There seems to be a skip in the very beginning of the LP... only a few seconds are missed of Let There be More Light. Beautiful, quiet, and well recorded for it's age considering that it's LP sourced. There are many clearer versions of the BBC recordings but if you like vinyl rips, this one is for you. Included below is a quick review from littlesheep.

- Marooned

Their does exist a CD release called Rhapsody In Pink (The Psychedelic Years) too, but it has not to be confused with this one that's directly extracted from the LP. The other CD in question should have been remastered exactly from this LP and should be a single CD after all with less tracks.

This *original* LP sounds very good and was used as source maybe for other CD releases too (see Dream's Factory, Silence and company). This extraction has very little LP noise - a pearl for vinyl-sound lovers.
