Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Venue: Mellon Arena
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Date: December 17th, 2008 (4:30pm Matinee Show)
Recorder: iRiver H340 (w/RockBox)
Microphones: Giant Squid Omnidirectional Powered Stereo Microphones
Lineage: iRiver HD (wav) --> Audition 3.0 (wav) --> iZotope RX --> Flac (Level 5)
Rating: A
This was recorded from the front row of section 3, directly in front
of Chris on stage. This placed me only 3 feet from the stage,
and the monitor delivering sound to the front of the floor sections.
A perfect location for recording. There was very little additional
audience chatter at the matinee show. Great for recording.
From this location, there are parts of the recording that are
only possible to get from the front row.
Noteable:
Various tracks: The squeaking noise was the motorized movement of
the lighting trusses over the stage. It's minimal, but there.
Also on some tracks there are whooshing noises from the pyro.
CD1 Track 3: The clanking noises were the road crew collapsing the
truss supports on the 3 platforms that delivered Anna, Chris and JLM.
CD1 Track 5: The "BOO!" was Chris messing with the kids just to
the left of me.
CD1 Track 12: While Bryan is giving narration, there are low moans
heard in the background. This is Stevie B coming out on stage
as a drunk with bottle in hand but without a mic. So it's not heard
from much further than the first several rows of stage right.
The "dropout" that occurs at 6:23 is actually Stevie B pulling away
from the microphone. It was performed like this at both Pittsburgh shows.
CD2 Track 3: Somebody yells out "hello Pittsburgh" while Chris is
trying to get silence. Only those close to the stage heard this one.
CD2 Track 12: When Anna falls to her knees at center stage, the CO2 jets
could probably be heard throughout the arena. But they were especially
loud in the front row, and cold too. It felt like somebody opened
a door when it was 10 degrees outside. LOL
This year was an auditory, visual, and sensory overload of a show! WOW!
I do apologize to Chris and the rest of the band for not "giving
back" at a level that is deserved, but when recording, you do
have to sit on your hands quite a bit. I did let out a couple
good yells...I couldn't sit still all night with a front row seat!
I did not record the second show and was able to react as I wanted
during that show. Thank you to TSO, the road crew, the sound crew,
and the lighting crew for two incredible performances.
